The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.
